What is a Plasma Ray skin treatment?

August 1, 2020

Hello to all my readers!  This time I want to share with you a new procedure which one of my best friends had done and tell you about the overall results.  The treatment is for fine lines and deep wrinkles, and it is truly amazing. This procedure is called Plasma Ray (also known as Dermoray).

So now, what is Plasma Ray?

“Plasma skin regeneration” is a non-laser treatment which is done with a device that delivers energy in the form of plasma to the skin, which rejuvenates facial lines and wrinkles, as well as skin pigmentation associated with photoageing. The device is the first non-laser technology approved by the FDA and clinically proven to give remarkable results for skin resurfacing and regeneration using plasma energy.

How does it work?

The skin consists of 3 layers, the epidermis, dermis and subcutis. The epidermis contains pigment-producing cells called melanocytes, which are responsible for skin coloring. The dermis is made up of collagen and elastin fibers that provide the skin with strength, toughness and elasticity.

As the body ages, the appearance and characteristics of the skin change. The epidermis becomes thinner with blemishes becoming more visible, and collagen in the dermis is gradually lost which contributes to the formation of facial lines, sagging skin and wrinkles.

Plasma skin regeneration technology uses energy delivered from plasma rather than light or radiofrequency.  Compared to other skin regeneration modalities (eg, radiothermoplasty). The procedure works by delivering millisecond pulses of nitrogen-based plasma to the skin via a handpiece.  Within the handpiece is an ultra-high-frequency generator that excites inert nitrogen gas, which is then converted into activated ionized gas called plasma. This plasma-containing energy is directed to the tip of the handpiece and onto the skin. The energy delivered produces a heating action that works at the skin’s surface to remove old photo damaged epidermal cells, and acts below the skin surface (dermis) to promote collagen growth.

And the results?

Although all protocols improve fine lines, tone and texture, and skin pigmentations, the skin tightening is more pronounced when high-energy treatments are applied, which is an option.  If choosing low-energy treatments, results will appear gradually over time and therefore you will experience little if any downtime. Most patients can have their first treatment following their first consultation and return to their daily activities directly afterwards.

What conditions are best treated by plasma skin regeneration?

As mentioned, plasma skin regeneration is used to rejuvenate skin by improving the facial lines and wrinkles as well as skin pigmentation associated with photoaging.  In this regard, it is best performed during the early signs of ageing for conditions such as:

  • Age spots and skin discoloration (hyperpigmentation).
  • Early jowling (increase of jowl size).
  • Loosening skin.
  • Creasing around the nose and mouth.
  • Wrinkling around the nose and mouth.

For low-energy treatment, a topical anesthetic cream is applied 1 hour before treatment starts. For higher energy, a strong topical anesthetic cream is applied.

Post-treatment and recovery

Low-energy PSR treatments may cause mild redness of the skin that lasts 2-3 days. Some flaking of the skin may occur as dead skin is replaced with new skin.

Higher energy treatments will cause mild to moderate redness of the skin in addition to the skin shedding (flaking) over the next 5-10 days after treatment.  Patients should be advised not to pick or peel skin to avoid scarring.

During the healing phase and for several months after treatment, it is recommended that the treatment area be protected using a moisturizing sunblock with an SPF of at least 50+. Protective clothing and wide-brimmed hats should also be used.

Usually, results are immediate and progressive. Clinical studies show that improvement progression continues for at least one year after treatment.

This new procedure provides dramatic changes just few weeks after the treatment, in my friend’s case I immediately noticed the change of her skin complexion and the rejuvenation effect around her eyes.
