How technology is also changing plastic surgery.

April 16, 2020

This week I decided to write something more informative about the way technology is helping the health industry.  Some of the changes are new ways of developing and improving our looks and the functions of the body.

Many doctors involved in the plastic surgery field have benefitted from these advancements, making their lives easier when they are in the OR performing all types of body and facial enhancement procedures.

People choose to have medical procedures done for a variety of reasons, including injuries or beauty enhancement.  Plastic surgery is one area that can change a person’s life.

Now, let me take you through a few advancements in technology that influence plastic surgery.

 Engineered Tissue

In the past, doctors accomplished the process of plastic surgery only with your own tissue. But now this tissue can be manufactured artificially. Doctors can use silicone implants as well as your tissue for many plastic surgery procedures.

Technically, it is the use of this biomaterial that allows for new ways of making tissue or bone-type structures scientists that plastic surgeons can use to improve profiles and appearance.  Some techniques can promote the regrowth of cells.  Other techniques allow the surgeons to mimic bones and cartilage that can be recreated using polylactic and polyglycolic acid.

3D Printing

Depending on its use, 3D printing can be an expensive procedure.  It is a revolution that has come about allowing doctors to take your tissue and “print” it using new technology.

Although not for everyone, 3D printing appeals to those who wish to have breast augmentation, lip enhancement, or some skin related issues. The process is streamlined and much better in some cases than traditional forms of tissue replacement.

Microsurgeries

This is one of the most recent advances in technology, contributing to the creation of low impact surgeries.

Microsurgeries are focused on keeping scarring to a minimum.  Doctors implement various devices to carry these operations out effectively.

Doctors typically use an endoscope to see inside of your body.  It’s a long thin device with a tiny camera at the end.  It is inserted in the patient’s body and used to locate problems and guide the doctors as they perform the procedure.

Microsurgeries are generally used for brow lift procedures and some plastic surgeons use it for breast enhancement surgeries and other procedures.

Laser Procedures

Laser surgery has advanced considerably in the last decade.  Lasers are a single wavelength of intense light that can focus on a small area.  It works on the skin by sending an extreme amount of energy, which will destroy an unwanted scar, brown spot, wrinkles, veins, or tattoos no longer needed.  Every year doctors find more ways that lasers can work on our skin to make it look younger and healthier.

Lasers are a great way to get a procedure done if you want a quick recovery time with little to no pain.

Liposuction Surgery

For many people who struggle with their weight, this can be a life-changing procedure.

Now with advancements in technology, there are many ways liposuction can be done, depending on how much fat needs to be removed.  Depending on the area and amount, you can get tumescent or laser-assisted liposuction.

Tumescent liposuction is when they inject numbing agents into the area to be liposuctioned and then perform the procedure.  It takes longer, but the results are more predictable and it minimizes swelling and bruising.

Vaser liposuction is newer to the scene. An ultrasound frequency breaks up the fat cells first, and then they are suctioned out. This requires new advanced machines and a complex ultrasound system in order to be done correctly. It is recommended that experienced plastic surgeons do this because it’s a new technology, and a lot still needs to be figured out from it.

In summary, the advances in science have opened up new hope for everyone who has surgical needs. Whether you want to have a facelift, tummy tuck, liposuction or a breast augmentation, or simply to have your face looking rejuvenated and healthy, technology has opened its doors.

There are plenty of advancements to be seen in technology.  Costa Rica is one example where advancements in technology and very low prices have a dramatic impact.  They have many of the latest tools for plastic surgery enhancement.   Costa Rica plastic surgeons are well trained with cutting edge techniques using all the technology I just talked about.
