Medical Tourism – how much power do women have?

How much power do women have to overcome and change an imposed self-image of inferiority?

This article is a need of me writing as a proud witness of the evolution of women nowadays which I can thankfully see through my own job and experiences in the medical tourism field. Oh yes, at vacation time, who does not want it?

In this case the term is quite different because it is a medical vacation which means you have to expose yourself to a big risk of traveling abroad miles away from home and trust everything will work out for you, putting your health in the hands of people you don’t know.

This is a big challenge for any person, mainly for women travelling to another country alone. Oh my gosh! Maybe the partner or family does not know or has not given approval for her to take this step in life, but deep down inside this is something she wanted so bad for a long time because she is not happy or is frustrated with her looks….so why not do this for herself when she has the means to do it? But too afraid because many if’s go through her mind?

The stories below illustrate the power of choice that each of us has in order to alter the way we treat ourselves:

I will first begin with the story of a very successful business woman from Houston, Texas who works in the construction industry and was always surrounded by men looking down at her, making her feel not appropriate to attend important meetings and construction expos as she was getting into her middle age and looking too tired and old in their eyes.

One day she decided to do something good for herself and improve her self-confidence, and she travelled alone to Costa Rica for a face and neck lift. At the beginning when I met her she was very insecure about what she was doing, but after meeting me and my nurse, things began to change for her.

The outcome of her face lift was amazing, she looked  ten years younger and she was so thankful she took this step.  Her self-esteem and confidence improved a lot, not to mention how much her business grew after this “crazy adventure”.   As she said to me… it is a matter of trusting in our intuition and overcoming those ingrained beliefs  that a woman needs the approval of others to do things for herself.

The second and most recent story is about this very young lady from Sydney, Australia who traveled to Costa Rica to do both plastic surgery and vacation at the same time all over South America.

This young girl traveled alone for many hours, and finally when she arrived and I met her, she was very anxious about that was going to happen and how the process of recovery would be after her liposuction and Brazilian buttocks augmentation.

She had lots of time in her journey from Australia to Costa Rica to have negative thoughts about the outcome of her medical vacation, and this is very human and normal and human, but is unnecessary if you had really done your homework of researching the plastic surgeon and medical facilities.

When we met, this young girl was so thankful with our comforting conversation, all her fears and doubts disappeared.  I told her about many people going through the same feelings of anxiety. She gave me the need of sharing this article with you all, as I see how brave she was to travel for so long at her young age to improve her looks and to begin living with a healthier life style.  It makes me so proud to see women evolving in this way and changing the mindset of inferiority.

I hope this article reaches many women going through this same process of wanting to do something about the way they look, changing the negative body image they have into the better version of themselves without questioning so much about permission from others when they have the tools to do something about it.

We just need to challenge those negative thoughts and make a decision about how we want to continue living, and that is what inspires both women mentioned above to make the right decision about, which to me, is women empowerment.
