In one of my meetings with patients I met a lovely lady from Jacksonville, Florida who was going to San José, Costa Rica for holistic zirconia implants and I couldn’t help but ask her what in the world is that? She began to teach me a little bit about it so I am going to share it with you guys.

Well, it all begins with the fact that holistic dentistry takes care of our own body’s health and also the environment. Some of the things she told me were that several studies indicate that mercury is connected to many health issues like allergies, chronic headaches, dermatitis, thyroid disorders, arthritis, colitis, digestive problems, spontaneous abort, Alzheimer, memory issues, high levels of triglyceride, autism and others. For those reasons, holistic dentistry uses nontoxic materials.

And, because of the demand, there has been an evolution in dental implants.  The new zirconia implants are totally metal free with very low allergic potential.  The white color of zirconium replaces the metallic appearance of titanium.  Additionally, ceramic implants and crowns retain less plaque and calculus than titanium, therefore promoting healthier gums.  Because of the advancements in implants, a higher level of osseointegration is expected (meaning the bone fuses better to the implants).

My friend told me all about this new trend in holistic dentistry which I believe is very good for your health and also for the environment since there is evidence that much of the mercury released to the environment comes from dental clinics.
